Downstream styrene monomer falls $29/mt on day / Benzene trade in East China drops 7,000 mt per week

The Asian benzene price fell by $21.66/mt during the trading session, to $1.031.67/mt. This fall was attributed by analysts to a decrease in discussions about downstream markets. On June 5, the downstream CFR China styrene and FOB Korean markers markers were both assessed at $1.151/mt, down $29/mt since their last assessment. Weakness in downstream styrene monomer was also attributed to a lack of demand in its own downstream markets such as polystyrene and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene. Sources in the market also attribute falling benzene to a correction of the market, considering current market fundamentals. "Benzene prices are falling because the market is cooling and there is not enough support to keep them high." A market source stated that it rose too quickly to begin with.
