The Styrene Monomer Markets continued to
grow on May 29, despite higher crude oil and benzene costs. As of 0830 GMT, the ICE
July Brent futures were 95 cents/b more expensive at $77.36/b. Upstream benzene
was $12-17/mt higher on the day and $857.67/mt at FOB Korea. Excitement over blending demand May 26 had helped support
styrene monomer prices. The bullishness
did, however, cool down a bit on May 29. A
trader said, "I do not think that the levels of ethylbenzene are suitable
for export even with the value-added tax refund." According to sources on the market, exports of ethylbenzene
qualify for a 13% refund of VAT imposed by the Chinese government. Another source, however, said that ethylbenzene had been
