Continued buyer caution on margin erosion / Chinese imports of ethylene increase 24.2% in a month

On the Asian ethylene market, there were very few firm discussions on April 23. Some participants attended a plastics convention in China. Many participants reported that discussions for May are mostly over, and there are few cargoes available. Some buyers said that eroded margins downstream would likely lead to continued caution with regard to spot purchases. China's imports of ethylene increased by 24.2% in March compared to last month, reaching 156,012mt, according to data released on April 22 by the China Customs Statistics Information Center. China's imports of butadiene in March decreased by 65.8% on a month-to-month basis to 14,818mt. The benchmark C+F Japan Naphtha was up $16/mt from day to day, reaching $706.625/mt at the Asian close on April 23, 2019. The ethylene/naphtha differential was calculated at $2003.375/mt. This...
