Chinese participants on Labor Day / July crude oil futures dip $3.16/b on day

CFR China styrene and FOB Korea markers were $1,138/mt on May 2 and $1,128/mt, respectively, down $19/mt since the previous assessment. As Chinese SM participants were on holiday for Labor Day, discussions about Asian SM were quiet. The assessed prices, however, fell in line with the slumping prices on crude oil and benzene upstream markets. Crude oil futures closed May 1 at a seven-week-low, following a bigger-than-expected build in US inventories. The price then increased in the mid-morning Asian trading on May 2, following the release positive economic data out of South Korea. This signaled demand optimism for the fourth largest crude importer. The front-month ICE Brent contract fell $3.16/b to $84.23/b.
