Asian methanol closed lower on May 24, as
markets continued to be weighed down by bearish fundamentals. Sources said that
a lack of consumer demand and an abundance of global methanol supplies continue
to affect sentiment and prices. A
few sellers in China were heard to offer June deliveries between $251 and
$250/mt CIF China. On May 24, a deal for an 8,000 mt cargo from Trinidad and
Tobago was reached at $250/mt CIF China. Arbitrage
opened between China and Southeast Asia as the spread between both regions
increased to $70/mt. Some traders in China
were heard to offer spot cargoes for $320/mt CIF Southeast Asia. Sources said that the lack of buying interest had
