Downstream markets stumble as inventories increase / Rising freights push China and India to expand - Apr 20, 2024

In the week ending April 19, Asian Purified Terephthalic acid CFR China and CFR India both increased by $5/mt, mainly due to an increase in upstream costs and higher freights. PTA producers are struggling with a weakening of the buying interest in China's downstream market due to high stocks and rising PX prices. Sources said that PX prices are rising, which is impacting the buying interest of PTA producers as they deal with low margins. A producer in Asia stated that the struggling polyester market, where inventories are still building up, is likely to increase pressure. The producer also said that downstream operation rates, which reached 93% in the past, are likely to fall ahead of May's holidays.
