On May 23, Northeast Asian ethylene
remained at $840/mt, CFR NE Asia. Southeast Asian ethylene fell $10/mt for the
day to $900/mt, CFR SE Asia. Market
sentiment remains bearish as buyers are concerned about unhealthy margins
downstream due to the poor demand for products derived from ethylene, such as
monomer styrene. The low demand is
attributed to a variety of macroeconomic factors such as high interest rate,
volatile upstream price and a weaker than expected recovery in demand from
China's opening. According to market
sources, most participants had already met their ethylene requirements for both
May and June. This further slowed down demand in a stale marketplace. Some sources stated that the market is expected to remain
