In a period of low trading, the Asian
ethylene price was $890/mt for Northeast Asia and $920/mt for Southeast Asia. A lack of demand for
ethylene derivatives, like styrene monmer, has led to unhealthy downstream
margins. Demand has been affected by
macroeconomic factors such as high interest rate, volatile upstream price and a
slower than expected recovery of demand in China. Wanhua Chemical Group in China said it closed its propylene
and ethylene production lines at its Shandong facility on May 8, citing an
official statement. Some market participants,
however, said that turnarounds would not have a significant impact on ethylene
