Buying urgency is low / Supply is expected to increase after the end of May

Apr 26, 2024

The Asian ethylene market was largely rangebound on April 25. Most discussions were conducted using a floating price basis. The selling indications remained between $10 and $20/mt above CFR NE Asia. Some sources said that buyers had enough stock for the short term and didn't need to commit immediately to any cargoes. Supply was also expected to increase as Asian naphtha steam cracker turnarounds are due to end in H2 May. This contributed to the lack urgency. The benchmark C+F Japan Naphtha was down $0.875/mt for the day to $710.25/mt by the Asian close on April 25, 2019. The ethylene-naphtha differential was calculated at $199.75/mt. This is below the typical spreads of $250/mt or $300-$350/mt that are typically seen for integrated producers.
