The European benzene market remained in
backwardation April 27 amid weak demand downstream and a broad premium in place
over feedstock naphtha. The five-to-30 days forward delivery laycan was
assessed down 50 cents on the day at $1,072.50/mt CIF ARA. Despite low demand
for benzene derivatives in the European market, a broad spread existed for the
product over feedstock naphtha barges. The spread was last assessed at $424.25/mt on April 26. This was
above the $200-$250/mt spread typically referred to as a healthy spread between
the two products. Values above can indicate shortage of benzene in the market,
but in this case long supplies of naphtha for the European market were paired
with minimized benzene production as toluene disproportionation and...
