On May 24, the Asian naphtha spot market
experienced an increase in activity. One tender was concluded, and market
participants were heard adopting an "await-and-see" stance. In the derivatives
markets, the relatively balanced fundamentals are reflected by the unchanged
backwardation during the midmorning trading on May 24. Brokers set the June-July Japan Naphtha Swap Spread at 50
cents/mt. This was unchanged from the Asian closing on May 23. Due to the razor-thin margins, and anemic downstream
petrochemical demands amid China's slower than expected economic recovery, the
naphtha market is likely to continue to be impacted. This will be exacerbated
due to supply remaining largely unchanged despite demand slowing during cracker
