- Benzene settlement falls $148-168/mt on month- Spot activity is illiquid for the day

On May 31, the European benzene contract
price for June was announced as $964/mt, down $148/mt compared to May's
settlement. Prices
for benzene were down through May as the demand from downstream sectors was low
and there was little evidence of exports that could help balance the European
market. After the five-day trading window
for contract settlement, where 37,000 mt were traded, spot activity was
illiquid. The laycan for five to thirty
days of forward delivery was priced at $949.75/mt CIF-ARA, down by $1.25/mt the
day before and $119.25/mt compared to the previous settlement date. The downstream styrene market remained illiquid. The spot
market spread for benzene was assessed at $29,25-29,65/mt.
