The Asian naphtha markets picked up
activity on May 18, with two tenders being concluded at lower premiums, as
sentiment eased due to supply exceeding demand. The derivatives market
reflected a weaker sentiment as the backwardation decreased in mid-afternoon
trading on May 18. Brokers pegged the front-month Japan naphtha exchange rate
for June-July at 25 cents/mt. This was down from 75 cents/mt in the Asian close
of May 17. Sources said that pessimism was
still rampant as the persistently sluggish demand for downstream products
showed no signs of improvement. The
regional naphtha market is also expected to be hit by further headwinds as the
supply of naphtha continues to remain largely stable, even though demand has
