On the European naphtha markets, the backwardation on May 28 was lower at the initial stage. The crack widened slightly and East-Wests – the spread between CFR Japan naphtha swaps and CIF NWE equivalent – grew. According to a broker, "naphtha demand remains slow on the gasoline blending side", and there is "no cracking demand from the petrochemicals" according to this source. The spread between gasoline and naphtha continues to narrow, indicating the weakness of gasoline as well as the preference for other blendstocks than naphtha. The spread between the front-month Eurobob gasoil swap and the equivalent forward-month naphtha switch is now $183.25/mt. It was $186.50 per metric ton on May 24.
