- Backwardated structure persists as the months progress- Limited support for downstream demand from styrene

The US Gulf Coast benzene
price was more stable on April 26 after consistent drops over the last four
trading sessions. As trading months progressed, the price of benzene had been
falling steadily. According to one source, the sudden drop in benzene was due
to "several macroeconomic factors" that affected the market as a
whole. From May to June, the market was in
a backwardation. DDP benzene in May at 362
cents/gal is the lowest since April 10. It
is equivalent to $1,083-1,123/mt. This is still higher than downstream styrene,
which stands at $1,050-1,090/mt. However, it's getting closer to breakeven. Styrene trading was muted due to limited export options from
the US Gulf.
