PTA producers in China were reluctant to increase operating rates during the week ending July 12, as they sought to improve margins and profitability. PTA for CFR China was $770/mt, down $1/mt from the previous day. Sources said that PTA producers were not in the mood to compromise on margins. This year, PTA producers' ideas are the same [so] that margins become more important," said a north Asian producer. A second producer in Asia stated that margins have steadily improved over the last few weeks, and now are above breakeven. The margins are improving because the PX is weaker, said a second producer.
