Asian Phenolic Resin Gains Momentum While Europe Struggles With Construction Problems

The price of phenolic resin in Asia increased from mid-February 2020 due to the limited supply of feedstock phenol following LG Chem’s Force Majeure which increased production costs. Prices were stable in early March due to a limited demand for laminates, coatings and molding compounds. Although some customers did restock after the holidays, actual transactions were slow and prices remained unchanged. Prices in Europe were low, which indicates a lackluster construction and industrial demand. The increase in feedstock phenol costs was a major factor in the rise in phenolic resin prices in China. The resulting supply issues, which restricted regional phenol availability, increased production costs.
