Asian HDPE / Demand is still low / Freight rates are reduced

In the week ending July 31, the recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE) market declined due to a weakening of demand. On July 31, recycled HDPE black blast molding pellets and recycled HDPE natural film were both down $10/mt from the previous week to $580/mt at FOB Southeast Asia. Due to high freight costs, buyers have adopted a wait-and-see attitude due to the slowdown in demand. This is especially true during off-peak seasons such as China and India. A producer reported that freight costs for a 40 foot container from Southeast Asia to India ranged between $3,300 and $3,600/mt. Sources said that although rates are slightly lower than the previous month, prices remain high. Singapore's port congestion is expected to decrease by August.
