Asian Glycols: Price strengthens after Golden Week holidays / Upstream pressure on costs leads to higher offers / Polyester demand increases, and operating rates increase

Asia's glycol markets saw a boost in the week ending Oct. 11 as monoethylene glycol discussions picked up in China after Golden Week. The import market prices were up by $12/mt on a week-on-week basis, as producers cited upstream costs pressures and volatile crude futures. The crude oil price was a factor, and the margins for ethylene production are still very low. It's only natural that sellers will increase their offers for MEG now that polyester is in its peak season. According to sources on the market, the operating rates of polyester plants in China rose from 90.7% in the Golden Week holiday period to 92.2% this week.
