In the week ending August 16, Asian monoethylene-glycol markets fluctuated within a narrow band as weak downstream demand continued to affect trades. Sources said that with key polyester operating rates at 86% for the week, the majority of trades were concentrated in China's domestic markets. According to a source in the market, textile manufacturers have also reduced their operating rates from 82% to 83%. This has contributed to the negative sentiment on the polyester markets. Market participants reported that most MEG purchases were made on a need-to basis. Buyers did not want to stockpile due to the bearish outlook for demand, and the fact that the lull period in polyester is expected to last through the end of August.
