Asian Glycols quiet amid slowdown in downstream Demand / Preference for deep-sea imports over domestic cargoes / Uncertain demand for polyester keeps buyers on guard

Dec 12, 2024

In the week ending Dec. 6, Asian monoethylene-glycols were scarcely traded, with few transactions heard due to a slowdown of downstream activity. The majority of purchases in China were made on a need-to basis, given the expected slowdown in manufacturing polyester as the Lunar New Year holiday approaches. Some sources said that buyers had already covered their December inventories, and discussions about January cargoes hadn't yet begun. Buyers were cautious due to the uncertainty surrounding demand for polyester after Lunar New Year. In the downstream, polyester production was estimated to have been 92% during the week. Inventory levels were around 20 days, which is within a healthy supply level. According to a producer however, the demand for MEG was decreasing. Fewer enquiries were heard during the week.
