Asian Glycols Fluctuate Ahead of Holidays in China / Polyester operating rates cuts impact MEG purchasing / Expected downstream run rate reductions add to the bearishness - Jan 16, 2025

In the week ended Jan. 10, the Asian monoethylene-glycol market fluctuated, with early gains leading to a late-week fall due to sliding downstream operating rates. According to a producer in China, the operating rates of polyester plants were 87% on Jan. 10. Other sources said that these rates would drop to low 80s% as Lunar New Year approaches. The impact of this has been felt in the demand for MEG as a feedstock. MEG sales slowed this week as buyers were not eager to hold large inventories before the holidays. Imported cargoes were not in high demand, as few buyers wanted to buy cargoes that would arrive late January or early Febraury, which would coincide with the long holiday.
