Most sources reported that the September cargoes had been negotiated. The price discussions for October cargoes are expected to start the following week, since naphtha crackers will have already finalized their operating rates. Market participants reported a bearish outlook for the near-term, citing weak margins at downstream that have capped interest in ethylene prices. The C+F Japan Naphtha Marker was up $16.50/mt for the day to $681/mt at the Asian close on August 30. The ethylene-naphtha differential was calculated at $199/mt. This is below the usual spreads of $250/mt or $300-350/mt that are typical for integrated producers.
