The Asian ethylene market was quiet on August 14, as participants remained on the sidelines due to near-term uncertainties. There was a buy-sell difference, as the downstream weakness continued, limiting buying signals, and sellers maintained their selling indicators despite some supply shortage. Sources said that volatile naphtha price fluctuations also made participants cautious. On the day, no deals were reported. Sources close to Mitsui Chemicals said that the plant in Ichihara, Japan, will restart next week following an emergency shutdown. Sources close to the company said that the cracker had been shut down earlier this week because of unidentified mechanical issues. The cracker is capable of producing 600,000 mt/year ethylene and 331,000mt/year propylene. According to trade sources, the impact on ethylene markets has been limited.
