Asian Ethylene - Negotiations begin for October / Discounts on FOB Korea cargoes have increased / End users prefer floating basis negotiations on volatility

On September 4, there was an increase in discussion on the Asian ethylene market as negotiations had started for October cargoes. Discussions were heard in the FOB Korea markets at discount levels of $38-$42/mt compared to CFR Northeast Asia. Some producers said that deals were done within this range. Some market observers said that a larger supply pool, coupled with weaker downstream margins, put more pressure on the price discussions. A trader in Northeast Asia said that because the margins were weak and the premiums for CFR Northeast Asia were low, it was difficult for traders to buy FOB cargo at the same prices as last month.
