Asian Ethylene Discussions are still adrift / Buyers remain cautious about downstream weakness / Ethylene-naphtha spread at $269.75/mt

The Asian ethylene market was largely unmoved by the discussions on March 5. Some buyers were heard in the CFR Northeast Asia market at $865-870/mt CFR NE Asia compared to some sellers at $900/mt or higher. The buying appetite was tepid at $900/mt, as some buyers cited weakened production margins downstream and persistently low demand. One exception was ethylene vinyl-acetate (EVA), where several sources reported that demand for EVA remains strong. However, ethylene's market sentiment was not boosted by the volume of ethylene compared to other key market drivers such as polyethylene. The C+F Japan Naphtha Marker was down 62.5 cents/mt in one day to $630.25/mt at the Asian close on 5 March. The ethylene-naphtha differential was calculated at $269.75/mt.
