The Asian ethylene market was quiet in the week ended May 24. Most buyers had sufficient coverage for the near-term. Feedstock naphtha has been on a downward trend sinceMay 20. This has made participants wary due to the shrinking margins between naphthaand ethylene. The use of LPG has helped to reduce costs, but this doesn't change that olefinproduction is still losing money due to high naphtha prices and low ethylene prices, said a trader from Northeast Asia. The operating rates of naphtha crackers will not increase anytime soon.
