Oversupply in Europe : Source / MTBE outright price drops $16/mt on day

According to sources on May 30, the European spot MTBE market is not expected to receive imports from Asia in June, despite the approaching peak driving season. Sources said that there was no expectation of imports due to a large influx of MTBE in Europe that had trouble finding buyers in April and may. This resulted in more than 250,000 mt. The source stated that freight costs from Asia were increasing, which contributed to the closing of the arbitrage into Europe. According to the source, the main reason for the lack in imports was due to an oversupply of MTBE in Europe during a slowdown market.
