The activity on the Asian naphtha markets
picked up in May. One sell tender was issued, and another one concluded at a
reduced premium. As market participants return from
their holidays in China, Japan, and South Korea, the shadow of a global
recession and a lackluster downstream demand continues to loom over the complex. The
derivatives market reflected a stronger sentiment as the backwardation
increased in the mid-afternoon trading. Brokers
assessed the June-July Japan Naphtha Swap spread at $3-4/mt. This is up from
the assessment of $2.50-3.75/mt on May 5, the Asian close. A
Japan-based trader stated that arbitrage volumes from Algeria to Asia will
likely be lower in may due to scheduled refinery maintenance. A second
