African Polyethylene: Demand slowdownin West Africa as producers push for increases / HDPE grades gain $20/mt / Demand dips ahead of Eid al-Adha

North African polyethylene prices rose in the week ending June 12, as container freight costs increased. Container shipping costs were the topic of discussion as consumers faced higher prices from global suppliers. Container prices have risen above the highs of early 2024, following the Red Sea Crisis. Limited container availability and blank sailings have exacerbated the situation. Prices have increased by $20/mt, but the demand has decreased. Converters in North Africa are expected to close for several days over the Eid al-Adha holidays. In West Africa, the demand situation was also similar. Some markets were also affected by Eid holidays. The general strike fears of unions in Nigeria also affected trading activity as union representatives demanded higher salaries.
