In the European polystyrene markets, activity was subdued in the week ending May 29. This led to a softening of spot prices for general purpose polystyrene as well as high impact polystyrene. The polystyrene industry has been quiet. In the weeks prior, market participants focused their attention on the contract price negotiations. PS prices rose in February, March, and April due to rising monomer costs. The rising cost of polystyrene has added to the pressure on the demand for virgin PS. Styrene prices fell by Eur111/mt in May. This led to price reductions, and some producers were hopeful that demand would increase due to the easing of price pressures on buyers.
