Asian AA/VAM: Stable to slightly lower amid weak demand / Acetic acid demand lackluster / VAM market sees sluggish adhesive and coating demand

Asian acetic acid and vinyl acetate monomer prices were largely stable to slightly lower week on week Nov. 21, amid weak demand. FOB China AA stable week on week at $305/ mt and CFR Southeast Asia VAM stable at $730/mt Nov. 21. Demand was lackluster, sources said, with market participants hearing acetic acid prices nearing production costs. Some cargoes in China were heard offered to the region, but no deals could be confirmed. In China, market sources expect some 800,000 mt/year of AA capacity to come onstream by the end of 2024, with another 1.5 million mt/year by mid-2025. Downstream demand from Asian VAM markets was weak from applications such as adhesives and coatings in the wake of sluggish growth in the Chinese, South Korean and Japanese construction sectors.
