European methanol prices rose in March due
to increased spot-buying activity. The
FOB Rotterdam 5-to-30-day spot price for methanol was Eur346/mt in March 2.
This is an increase of Eur5/mt from the previous day. Market structure changes
between March and April have resulted in a market backwardation. This
demonstrates the prompt market strength. On
March 2, at least 8,000 mt were traded spot. Sources say that 5,000 mt was heard being traded in an
Eur344-346/mt price range for March delivery, while 3,000 mt was heard in an
Eur343-344/mt price range for April. A
trader stated that March seemed tight suddenly. Sources in Asia reported that methanol prices in China fell
on March 2, based on bearish expectations.
