US Gulf Orthoxylene prices rebound this week MX prices rise 13 cents in a week / Koppers confirms closure of 100,000 mt/year PA Plant: CEO

US orthoxylene spot price at 44.50 cents/lb on May 9, an increase of 1.75 cents compared to May 2. Mixed xylenes were priced at 274 cents/gal FOB USG on May 9, an increase of 13 cents week-over-week, influenced by higher bids and the June RBOB price during the week. Leroy Ball, CEO of US-based Koppers, confirmed that the company has stopped producing phthalic anhydride during its first-quarter earnings conference call on May 9, 2009. The company stopped phthalic-anhydride production in its 100,000 mt/year Stickney, Illinois plant in April, well ahead of the target May date. Sources noted an increase in market demand that could be linked to Koppers's reduced product supply. PA traded on the spot market last in the low 70s cents/lb range.
