The
Chinese methanol market may have firmed up in response to higher crude oil
futures on May 16, but the weak Chinese industrial data also weighed heavily. The Chinese methanol markets saw more offers than bidding on
May 16 as traders were under pressure to sell due to the length of the market
and the thin downstream demand. The offers
ranged from $274 to $278/mt CFR China, but there were few buying signals. East China methanol prices were around Yuan 20/mt more than
the previous day, at Yuan 2 325-2 330/mt. Crude
oil futures also rose following the announcement by the US Energy Department to
replenish strategic petroleum reserve. The
