Support for benzene emerges from WTI crude oil that is higher and open Jan contract trade window / As buy interest from Europe and Latin America shrinks, styrene demand becomes nonexistent

US December benzene rose 6 cents/gal to 324c/gal on Dec. 16, thanks to support from WTI crude oil futures and amid paper arbitrage opportunities. WTI crude futures were $1.51/b lower on Dec. 16, at $72.38/b. This lends support to benzene talks on the day. Bullish sentiment also emerged during the trade window to inform January's benzene contract prices and supported benzene markets. One source said that intraweek weakness this week was counter to firmer January ideas heard across the market. The session started with a steady flow of liquidity, and a 327 cent/gal trade for January was heard. Arbitrage opportunities were sought by traders with Europe and Asia. Dec. 13 saw increased demand from Europe and continued into December 16.
