- Styrene and benzene spot prices tumble- July: Styrenic market demand slows
significantly

European styrene prices plunged on July 14
due to low demand from the downstream sector. The July trading price was $1,600-1,640/mt.
August loading dates saw lower bids. The forward
loading can for styrene fell from $159.75-190.50/mt to $1,590-1,620/mt FOB AR in the
five to thirty days. The July contract pricing levels have increased
significantly due to a desire to shrink downstream in the styrene marketplaces.
Buyers prefer to take long summer vacations to avoid paying what they consider
to be peak pricing. Since July 1, spot prices have seen a sharp
decline, with spot prices falling $199-220/mt. Prices were
also being pressured in the benzene markets upstream. August
trading was recorded at $1,300-1,340/mt with some backwardation between July and
August.
