As a result of weak downstream demand, and
a glut in supply, the Asian propylene market lost ground for two consecutive
days on August 23. The
ICE October Brent crude oil futures rose $2.84-3.50/b to $97.52-102.50/b on
Aug. 23 from their previous Asian close. However, the market's battered
propylene sector was not supported by the gains in crude oil. Shandong propylene was at Yuan 6,800-7,200/mt expand, which
is down Yuan 35-50/mt for the day. A South
Korean cracker source stated that "[the market] is] so bad... but most
crackers don't have the room to lower operating costs further." To reduce margins and the lower downstream demand, many
