The US Gulf Coast spot price of benzene
dropped 47.5 cents over the week ending Sept. 2, due to lower demand and a
shortage in US styrene imports. According
to sources, poor benzene demand has resulted in a sharp drop in benzene prices
due to delayed US styrene imports. About
40% to 45% of US styrene use was exported. Derivative cumene operating rate was 85%, derivative
Cyclohexane operating rate was 80%, and styrene operational rates were 70% to
80% before the closure of Westlake's styrene plants. Recent American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturer's data
show that low consumption has reduced the need for large benzene inventories. These fundamentals continue to support a forward-looking
