Chinese domestic MEG prices dropped on July
14, as a result of expectations that downstream polyester plants would reduce
their production. In the face of uncertain demand,
polyester plants cut production rates and suffered from weak margins, market
sentiment became cautious. Although the impact on co-feedstock and purified terephthalic acids was expected to be more severe, market participants
were concerned about the effects on MEG if there is a decrease in overall
polyester demand. MEG facilities in Northeast Asia are expected to
reduce production due to the current weak margins. However, there is a limit to
how much they could reduce, as they have contractual obligations to meet,
