Asian ethylene was the steady day on day July
19, with downstream margins remaining negative. CFR Japan naphtha prices rose from $17.375-23.500/mt
to $775.5-800.5/mt on July 19, with a day when they were $17.375-23.500/mt. The spread
price between naphtha and ethylene was $84.5-90.5/mt as of July 19, which is
lower than the $300-$350/mt breakeven spread. A producer
from Korea stated that the price of ethylene downstream products was very low
and no one is buying them. An ethylene trader agreed that the
market is struggling and said that there are no positive factors. The ethylene
trader stated that even if I wanted to sell ethylene, he would sell it on a
floating basis.
