August 15 saw a further decline in water
levels at the Rhine, causing more weakness in the Northwest European naphtha
markets. Low water levels have also disrupted logistics and driven up freight
prices, which has impacted the distribution of naphtha. Sources said that Naphtha will remain under
downward pressure until Rhine conditions improve. One source
stated that the Rhine situation was very bad for European open-spec naphtha
prices because it is the one traded by petchems. WSV, the
German waterways authority, reported that Rhine water levels at Kaub's key
chokepoint were 31 cm on Aug. 12, a 3 cm decrease from the previous day. Below 100
cm at Kaub, barges need to short load, capping how much naphtha can be
transported...
