The lack of sustainability regulations in Asia has limited the purchasing interest, with exports to Europe or the US being the main focus. Market players anticipated that R-HDPE would be in high demand compared to virgin HDPE after the Single-Use Plastic Directive of the EU took effect beginning 2025. Concerns about the lack penalties for failing to meet the 25% recycled content goal set by the SUPD remain. Recycling advocates have urged the European Commission (EC) to implement significant penalties in order to encourage increased consumption of recycled material.
