After falling crude oil prices and a glut
of benzene, the European benzene market displayed a sharp bearish trend in the
week to Aug. 5. The 5- to 30-day forward delivery lay
can now be estimated at $959.75-980.50/mt CIF-ARA, which is down $59-65/mt and
$191.25-210.50/mt for the week. This was due to a sharp fall in crude
oil prices during the week. On Aug. 5, the 1630 London time
assessment for the ICE Brent crude front–month swap was $95.65-100.50/b, down $14.60-20.50 from the
previous week. Prices of styrene were also bearish downstream. The market
dropped $182.25-210.50/mt over the week, bringing the five- to 30-day forward
loading laycan down by $1,286.75-1,300.50/mt FOB AR. LyondellBasell,
