High styrene prices support thin benzene activity Styrene supply relief is expected in May from Asia imports



As a result of the high prices in the derivative styrene
markets, the European benzene market surged through the week to April 22, with
downstream support being felt. Based on an existing contango structure, the benzene five-
to 30-day forward delivery laycan was $1,215-1,235/mt CIF AR April 22, up 50c
on the day and up to $25-30/mt for the week. Styrene
supplies were scarce downstream, which supported higher prices at the prompt
end. Midweek trading was widening with
April's trades for $2,500-2,520/mt versus $2,100-2,120/mt. There was a steep backwardation in May. However, there were
hopes that some relief from supply pressures would come from Asia-origin
