Sources said that the Asia naphtha market
was able to take advantage of ample supply from India and the Middle East,
despite lower end-user demand. The paper
market had a deeper contango, reflecting bearish market sentiment. At the
August 12 close, the Mean of Japan naphtha swap spread at minus 50c/mt. This
was 50 cents/mt less than the previous day. The spread
between CFR Northeast Asia Ethylene and CFR Japan Naphtha Physical narrowed from $64.75-70.25/mt over the week to $109.25-120.5-0/mt by the Asian close on Aug. 12. Since May
13, the spread has been below $250-270/mt, which is the minimum breakeven point
for integrated producers who make ethylene from naphtha. The current
