Asia PP: Weak in Southeast Asia due to lackluster demand / South Korea’s Hyundai Chemical to shut PP units / Outlook negative for PP

The Asian polypropylene market was stable in China but weaker in Southeast Asia in the week to Oct. 8 on lower discussions. Markets were quiet due to China’s National Holidays from Oct. 1-8. In Southeast Asia, demand remained weak, and many Southeast Asian converters were heard to be buying locally due to sufficient supplies from local factories. A producer acknowledged that many sellers preferred to sell locally and would lower prices to maintain local market share. Both traders and sellers said the demand outlook for Southeast Asia was weak due to uncertain economics. In plant news, South Korea’s Hyundai Chemical will shut its 500,000 mt/year polypropylene units in Daesan starting Oct. 13 for a two-month turnaround, according to a source close to the matter.
