Prices for Asian paraxylene continued to fall on the 4th of July, impacted by the lack of support provided by downstream sectors and declining market confidence. Asian PX is down $10/mt per day to $839.67/mt F.R.Taiwan/China on July 4. Participants on the market said that sentiment towards PX was still under pressure as downstream demand for polyester and purified terephthalic acids continued to decline. One trader said, "It is currently the off-season for polyester downstream." PTA supplies in China remain relatively tight. However, the expectations for PTA have weakened due to a weaker downstream polyester industry. Sources have pointed out that the low operating rates of the polyester sector is limiting demand for feedstocks higher up the chain.
