US Styrene prices remain high as demand for exports from Europe continues / Backwardation doubles from $20/mt to $40/mt / Trade done at $1,025/mt

Prices for styrene-monomer spot rose at the end the week ended May 9, after an flurry late activity appeared to indicate that the shortage in Europe could persist longer than anticipated. Styrene loading was prompt in May, at $970/mt. This is up $20/mt for the day but down slightly on a weekly basis. The increased assessment was made amid reports that a shortage is developing in Europe and an increase in the demand for material to be exported from the US Gulf. Sources said that an outage at a major producer will now last until the end of June.
