- Styrene prices jump- Suggestion for production hiccups, higher-than-expect
demands

The Dec. 14 spike in spot European styrene
prices was due to talk of a production issue and higher than expected demand. According to one source, there was a production
problem in Europe that was lending support to prices. Another source also
suggested support for maintenance in Q1 next year. A source
stated that "Demand isn't as bad as people expected across
consumers", but added that buy interest remained generally low. According to
the source, many companies had prepared for the worst in their budgeting cycles
in September. However, demand was not unusual and it slightly exceeded
expectations. The price trend for benzene was also firmer on
Dec. 14 due to recent talk about tighter supply and de-stocking activities.
